Bitumen membrane sheet is made from bitumen and fiberglass plus polymers are perfect for waterproofing roofs, basements, below-ground structures, bridges and other structures. It is designed to protect residential and commercial buildings. Bitumen (asphalt or coal-tar pitch) is a mixed substance made up of organic liquids that are highly sticky, viscous, and waterproof.
The reinforced bitumen membranes (RBM) are the ideal choice for both new build and refurbishment projects. RBM performs excellently over all types of roof decks and insulations. It is also referred to as elastomeric reinforced bitumen membrane (RBM). The life time and expiry of bitumen membrane is between 5 to 10 years.
There are many types of membrane in sheet and liquid form but most popular roll sheet is
1. APP bitumen membrane
Atactic Polypropylene Membrane is a special waterproofing material that is manufactured from Bitumen. They come in rolls. Each roll measures 10 meters by 1 metre and covers an area of 8.7 m². With proper workmanship, the APP membrane is a very efficient and durable waterproofing material used in most constructions. It is a common waterproofing material used on concrete flat roofs or roofs with low pitch. Apart from concrete roofs and low pitched roofs, other areas of application are concrete gutters, basements and retaining walls.
2. SBS bitumen membrane
Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS) describes a family of synthetic rubber derived from styrene and butadiene. SBS is a thermo plastic elastomer that has an excellent abrasion resistance and aging stability when blended with bitumen, making it the perfect bitumen modifier to achieve cold flexibility and elastic properties. This material has the ability to retain its shape after being stretched and therefore, is widely used in modified bitumen roofing, coatings, sealants and paving amongst other applications.
3. Self-adhesive bitumen membrane
Self Adhesive bitumen membrane (SAM) are self-adhesive polymer modified bituminous waterproofing sheet membranes, laminated onto different kind of films or fabrics. With high performing and available solar reflective HDPE cross laminated films, unique properties can be achieved. With Polyester or Polypropylene surfacing, SAM’s can replace traditional protective membranes. Due to the self-adhesive properties, torching is not necessary which makes the application safe and easy for the applicator. Combining strong films with less thickness of the membrane, the carbon footprint and environmental impact reduces by 200 percent compared to traditional systems.
