Bitumen emulsion

Bitumen emulsion has been used for more than 70 years. The main use of bitumen emulsion is within road building and road maintenance but bitumen emulsions have also found extensive use within other fields such as roofing in building industry. During the last 15 to 20 years there has been a substantial increase in the use especially for road purposes. The emulsions can be classified in different types depending upon what type of emulsifier has been used to emulsify the bitumen, e.g. anionic, cationic, non-ionic and amphoteric emulsions. In the earliest emulsions anionic emulsifiers were exclusively used, usually soaps of long-chain fatty acids. These systems had the disadvantage that the adhesion to stone material was rather poor. About 20 years ago cationic emulsifiers, fatty acid amines, appeared on the market at a low price. This laid the foundation to the great increase in the use of bitumen emulsions during the last 15 years.

What is bitumen emulsion?

Bitumen emulsion is mixture of bitumen and water along with emulsifier to keep the mixture stable. The emulsifier chooses depend on electrical bar of the aggregates.

Bitumen SS1-H

Bitumen SS1h are slow-setting, anionic type of asphalt emulsions manufactured according to specifications of ASTM D977 – “Standard Specifications for Anionic Emulsified Asphalt.” It is a dispersion of small droplets of penetration grade asphalt cement in water with the aid of an emulsifier. The size of the droplets is normally in the order of 1-20 microns, with some particles as big as 100 microns. Since these droplets are negatively charged, breaking (coalescence) is purely by evaporation of water.

Bitumen CMS2

The medium setting grades are designed for mixing with coarse aggregate, as these grades do not break immediately upon contact with aggregate. CMS mixes possess some measure of workability and have high viscosities to prevent runoff. These are generally used for cold mix applications and mixed-in-place operations.

Bitumen CMS-2H

CMS-2H bitumen is often used for adhesive-coating. This is applied to an underlying surface to aid adhesion of the following asphalt layer. Bitumen CMS-2H is also used for fog sealing, fog spraying, concrete curing, injection, sealing, patching, formation, and substrate and surface dressing.

Bitumen K140

Bitumen K140 is a cold applied rapid-acting 40% cationic bitumen emulsion. When cured Leotak forms a thin but uniform film of bitumen on the road surface which gives an adhesive bond between a bituminous overlay and an existing surface. For best results, tack coating is strongly recommended when performing such tasks as overlaying with hot rolled asphalt, macadam or when patching or carrying out inlaid work.

Usage of Bitumen emulsion

Asphalt Emulsion is an aqueous homogenous solution in a liquid bituminous material using an emulsifier. It maintains a level of liquidity suitable for each type of road construction, mixing with aggregate or paving on the road surface. Water in Asphalt Emulsion will evaporate and let the asphalt continuously form up as a film covering the aggregate or road surface. The speed of such formation depends on the quality (grade), usage volume and type of chemical used in the production of the Asphalt Emulsion. A key property of the asphalt in Asphalt Emulsion is cohesion as well as waterproofing.

Packing of bitumen emulsion

It could be in bulk, tanker,IBC and drum.
