Aluminum sulfate is a chemical compound with the formula Al2(SO4)3. It is soluble in water and is mainly used as a coagulating/flocculating agent in the purification of drinking water and waste water treatment plants, as also in paper manufacturing.
It is rarely, if ever, encountered as the anhydrous salt. It forms a number of different hydrates, of which the octadecahydrate Al2(SO4)3•18H2O is one of the most common types. Both forms are soluble in water, noncombustible, and nontoxic.It is commercially available in solid (kibbled, crushed, or powder) and liquid (50% w/w solution) forms.

When the it comes into contact with water, it forms aluminum hydroxide and a much diluted sulfuric acid solution, which alters the soil acidity.
