Gilsonite as a Carbonaceous Foundry Sand Additive

Laboratory tests were performed to determine the effect of five commonly used carbonaceous additives on new sand mixes. The additives evaluated were seacoal, pitch, petroleum asphalt, Gilsonite of a "coarse" and "fine" grind, and blown asphalt. The tests comprised evaluating physical properties of new sand mixes at approximately 1% volatile at 900°F (482.2°C) and 40% compactability.Physical sand properties developed with non-seacoal carbonaceous materials were equal to or superior to seacoal at significantly lower additive levels. Gilsonite and asphalt mixes appeared to improve physical properties of density, water requirements and green, dry, baked and hot strengths. An even greater improvement in foundry sand green, baked, and hot strength was obtained by increasing the fineness of grind of the [...]

The Use of Gilsonite in Steel Making Additives

The Use of Gilsonite in Steel Making AdditivesGilsonite is an ingredient in several additives used in the production of steel. It is used in Limestone, Lime, Magnesium, and Calcium Carbide additive systems. The function of these additives is to remove impurities such as sulfur, silica, and phosphorus from the molten steel and move them to the molten slag layer.Gilsonite fulfills several roles as a component in Steel Making Additives. First, Gilsonite is approximately 75% volatile at 1900°F, and when added to the molten steel it promotes the mixing of the additives so the chemical reactions that will move the impurities to the molten slag layer can take place. Next, the volitiles that are given off are high in lustrous carbon, which will further reduce the Iron Oxide to steel. Although CO reduces most of the Fe3+ by indirect [...]

gilsonite is unique natural resin

Gilsonite is a Unique Natural ResinABSTRACTGILSONITE has been used successfully for many years in sealant and adhesive products. These applications were restricted to products that could utilize the inherent variability of GILSONITE. Now with new production technology and quality control, this unique natural resin can be considered as a substitute for synthetic resins at a fraction of the raw material cost. Example formulations are presented which use GILSONITE to provide cost effective products. Included in the examples presented are GILSONITE/heat reactive systems and water based products. These suggested formulas are given to show trends and are not intended to represent final products. Cost and performance data are also presented. Information for the use of GILSONITE in the formulations as a substitute for synthetic [...]

How to use Gilsonite in fiberboard wood

Gilsonite resin is a commercially proven thermoplastic binder for fiberboard products made by the wet/dry process. High purity, naturally occurring Gilsonite resin is a hard, non tacky binder that produces strong, water resistant fiberboard products, often at faster process rates and with special cost reduction features.Gilsonite has outstanding dimensional stability, stiffness, and strength when compared with other binders, such as phenol/formaldehyde, urea/formaldehyde, bitumen, wood rosin derivatives, and linseed oil. Unique binder systems with special properties are possible by combining Gilsonite with bitumen, tall oil products, or thermosetting resins. Either alone or in combination with other binders, Gilsonite offers the fiberboard manufacturer a means to:Avoid formaldehyde emissionsProduce thinner, stronger MDF [...]

Gilsonite Resin in Adhesives

Gilsonite Resin in AdhesivesGilsonite is a high purity, natural resin. Gilsonite offers low-cost and high-performance features that formulators of adhesives should evaluate when color is not a determining factor.Gilsonite is soluble in common adhesive solvent systems, and has wide compatibility with common elastomers and resins. Of particular significance to formulators of contact adhesives and construction mastics is the good compatibility of Gilsonite with neoprene rubber and the effectiveness of Gilsonite as an end-block resin for Kraton. The hot melt formulator will recognize the potential for Gilsonite in combination with EVA and polyethylene.Gilsonite enhances shear and peel strengths to wood, paper, glass, aluminum and concrete. And, since Gilsonite is a naturally occurring resin, it has FDA approval for uses in [...]
