Gypsum inhibit swelling and provide for base exchange of shale and clays to the calcium form

GYPSUM is used to prepare gyp-base drilling Ḁuids. The limited water solubility of the material provides an excellent inexpensive source of calcium ions to inhibit swelling and provide for base exchange of shale and clays to the calcium form. Gypsum is the common name for the mineral calcium sulfate, which has a chemical formula CaSO4. It is a calcium-based material which is effectively use in drilling fluid or water mud.It also can be used for drilling shales and used in gypsum/lignosulfonate or polymer muds as a source of calcium ions for inhibition and to convert bentonite to the calcium-ion form. It provides a great amount of calcium while using gyp-base drilling fluids. The calcium solubility of gypsum includes with higher chloride levels. It is a natural sulphate existing layered form lake surfaces or any other place which is rich with some chemical. It uses in: manufacture of wallboard, cement, plaster, soil conditioning, a hardening retarder in Portland cement. Varieties of this items known but this usage depends on the durability of gypsum.

Gypsum general usages

This chemical generally uses as an soil additive which improve the soil quality for work and adjust the moisture of mud. Its specifically benefits such crops as alfalfa, corn, cotton, wheat, and peanuts where substantial amounts of sulfate Sulphur are required.
  • As an additive to turbid water, particularly ponds, to settle dirt and clay particles without injuring aquatic life.
  • As a food additive. It can be used in clarity of wine, beer and kind of an ingredient in canned food, ice cream, bread and some of other foods cheese as well.
  • As a color additive for drugs and cosmetics.
  • A primary ingredient in toothpaste.

Gypsum in drilling

Because of using lime Gypsum base mud provides the calcium inhibition without the high pH resulting additive muds used when drilling massive Gypsum formations prevent wash out and are chemically inert to the effects of both calcium and sulfate contamination. It can reduce the carbonate rate while not increase the Ph of mud. This product is normally used in concentrations of 2 to 5 lb./bbl. for conversion of sodium-base drilling fluids to gyp-base drilling fluids. For carbonate removal, the concentration levels depend on the degree of carbonates present in the drilling fluids. It is so beneficial to get high quality soluble calcium ions as a result of using this material maintained with higher filtrate calcium and lower alkalinity than lime fluids to increase their inhibiting effect on clays.

Gypsum in Construction

This mineral, is the second softest of all the minerals. It is not flammable so it is fire resistance. It is also have sound resistance properties and good stabilizer not cause to buckle or warp. This material is used in the interior and residences, businesses and any buildings where people gather including schools, stores, airports and mall. Gypsum provide outstanding performance for everyday comfort, fire resistance, acoustics, thermal insulation, and impact resistance boards. The unique properties of this make possible many of the beautiful features of buildings’ modern interiors
