Calcium carbonate is one of the most commonly used additives in the paper, paint and plastics industries. While naturally occurring ground calcium carbonate (GCC) is usually used as filler in many applications, synthetically manufactured precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) may be tailor-made with respect to its morphology and particle size allowing this materials to fulfill additional functions.
However, commonly known PCC production processes including the steps of calcimine crude calcium carbonate, slaking it with water, and subsequently precipitate calcium carbonate by passing carbon dioxide through the resulting calcium hydroxide suspension, need high quality starting materials as there is no reasonable method to separate impurities from the raw material during this process.
