What is barite? Barite is a mineral composed of barium sulfate (BaSO4). It receives its name from the Greek word ‘barys’ which means ‘heavy.’ This name is in response to barite’s high specific gravity, which is exceptional for a nonmetallic mineral. The high specific gravity of barite makes it suitable for a wide range of industrial, medical, and manufacturing uses. Barite also serves as the principal ore of barium. The primary countries in which commercial deposits of barite are currently found are the United States, Turkey, Vietnam and Russia.

Barite as weighting agent

Naturally occurring barite (barium sulfate) has been utilized as a weighting agent in drilling fluids for many years. Drilling grade barite is often produced from barium sulfate containing ores either from a single source or by blending material from several sources. It may contain additional materials other than barium sulfate mineral and thus may vary in color from off-white to grey or red brown. barite powder

Barite grade by density

  • Up to Grade 3.9
  • Grade 4.0
  • Grade 4.1
  • Grade 4.2
  • Grade 4.3
  • Grade above 4.3

Barite application

Drilling Industry (Rig) The high-density muds which is contained barite are pumped down the drill stem, exit through the cutting bit and return to the surface between the drill stem and the wall of the well

Medical Industry Barite has the ability to block x-ray and gamma-ray emissions. Barite is used to make high-density concrete to block x-ray emissions in hospitals, power plants, and laboratories Rubber & Plastics Pulps and Papers and fire work It is used as an insert material in pesticides production. Barite is used in fireworks production due to its ability to give green color to the fire. Paints and Coatings It is a wonderful replacement to Basofor, Crypton, Titanium dioxide, and Monox which are used as filler. It is very useful in regulating the thickness of the paint. Cosmetic Industry Its gentle and mild effect on the skin Barite is a mineral composed of barium sulfate. The high specific usages is so wide like industrial, medical, and manufacturing uses. Barite also serves as the principal ore of barium. It is especially common as concretions and vein fillings. It occurs among where these carbonate rock units have been heavily weathered, large accumulations of barite are sometimes found at the soil-bedrock contact. It is also found as concretions in sand. These concretions grow as barite crystallizes within the interstitial spaces between sand grains
